New Business 1) Use of Force Policy: Chris Bailey and Gerry Rebo came in to explain the new „Use of Force‰ policy. The main motivation of this policy is to protect the officers, and allow them to better protect the students. The policy brings the officers up to a „non-lethal‰ level, meaning that they will not carry lethal weapons. The officers have gone through training to meet the requirements of Act 235, and will be required to complete a refresher course periodically. The officers will be carrying a type of pepper spray, handcuffs, and a collapsible metal baton. The baton is only meant to strike muscles such as the calf or forearm, and not joints or the head. This policy is part of a response that starts with verbal responses and eventually would escalate to non-lethal force if the incident cannot be resolved. Other colleges in the area have policies that range from officers carrying nothing to officers carrying firearms. Currently there is no policy dictating what a Public Safety Officer may or may not do. Officers have also been trained to give first-aid to help anyone who would be exposed to pepper spray. If this policy is approved by the President‚s Cabinet, an announcement would be made with an official start date. One concern from general board was mistreatment. Other students thought the policy was a good idea, and that maybe students will think twice before causing trouble. Mick made a motion to accept the policy, and Liz seconded. The motion passed 22-0-0. 2) Semester Overview: a. Winter Weekend (Feb 19-21): Julia is the chair of Winter Weekend this year. We need a theme for this year. Ideas included ice cream flavors, fast food, road signs, cereal, state slogans, ad slogans, super heroes, albums, movies, holidays and tourist attractions. The top 3 ideas were road signs, cereal, and super heroes. These ideas will be voted on by the students in an on-line survey. b. Casino Night (March 19) c. Spring Fling (April 2): Ashley Klein and Candice volunteered to co-chair the dance. The theme will be voted on at a future meeting. d. Block Party (April 24) 3) Sodexho: It seems that last semester a lot of promises were made by Sodexho, with little or no follow through. Prices in the Rifkin Café are still a big issue. Selena will be contacting Scott Byers to find out exactly what issues we have a say in. Students who are not satisfied can pass comments to the food committee, Sodexho, or even John Pesta (who oversees the contract). Liz and Rob volunteered to co-chair the food committee. Old Business 1) Cycling Club constitution approved 2) New survey provider approved
